Why is Meditation So Hard?

Ah, meditation.

why is meditation so hard

Soothing, quiet atmosphere ✅

Comfortable Sukhasana ✅

Focus on breathing ✅

Stillness within the body✅

Negative thoughts ✅

Past traumas ✅

….WAIT! I definitely didn’t sign up for the last two.

Why am I rushed with unwanted thoughts and feelings every time I settle my body down and find stillness?

If meditation is used to achieve inner peace and quiet, why can’t I get there?

Meditation is easy for NO ONE! For most people, including myself, it is incredibly difficult to be still. In fact, meditating, in general, is hard.

Wait, Morgan. You basically teach this stuff for a living and you think meditation is hard?

Yes! Meditating IS hard. It is hard for me and it’s hard for all of my clients. I don’t think I’ve ever had a client say, “Wow, this meditating stuff is soooo easy.”

Most of the time when I ask my clients, “Hey, how is the meditation going?” they usually respond with something along the lines of ehhhhh, ok at best.

Ya’ll, this is not a painless practice! Anyone who says otherwise is lying.

Last year I was fortunate enough to travel from one paradise to another and visited Kauai, Hawaii.

While I was there, I got to explore this incredible cave. There is something about being burrowed under the earth that is exceedingly soothing. The energy was different—it was still. Everything had settled, like when you don’t shake a snow globe for a while.

I sat down to meditate. During this practice I had a revelation about why meditating is so hard. Once I got my body still, I was quite literally swarmed with physical pain. Pain that I had sustained from my vacation activities.

The physical stuff passes quickly, right? Our bodies take the sore muscles, bumps, and bruises and typically give us a speedy recovery.

The emotional stuff is where it gets tricky (and icky).

Once you get past the physical discomfort from wiggling around in Sukhasana, you then must get into the deeper emotional aspect which is even more painful. (yay! 🙄)

The emotional stuff does not heal as fast as the physical stuff. We don’t necessarily have all the tools for our ego, mind, thoughts, and traumas, as we do for the traumas that happen to our physical bodies.

So, how can we make meditation easier ourselves when we experience these emotions?

💛 Recognize that having these strong emotions when meditating is normal. Nothing is wrong with you; this is just your unique experience.

💛 Keep meditating! Do not quit when uneasy emotions arise. It is imperative to work through them during your practice to learn how to feel them out.

💛 Don’t suppress your thoughts and emotions. Meditating is about strengthening your awareness. Don’t ignore what your mind and body are trying to feel versus suppressing it back down.

My self-care routine revolves around meditating.

I will go fucking crazy without it, you guys. Meditation along with yoga keeps me grounded and helps me keep a clear mind. It is how I care for my mind and body.

If I had let the negative emotions and the drudged-up trauma intimidate me into never meditating again, I would not be writing this blog post.

I would not have this business.

Meditation has created a spiritual outlet for me. It has given me the ability to hone my inner thoughts and feelings. Above all else, it has made my life easier.
