The Yoga Sutras: Imagination, Sleep, Memories

Daydreams or Distractions?

Do you regularly drift away into your day-dreamiest daydreams?

Or frequently replay the past like a movie?

Feel like you’re sleeping so much but still not waking up rested?

That silly mind.

Imagination, dreams, and memories constantly make our minds turn.

Simply put, they are dis👏 trac👏 tions 👏.

Here’s a quick rundown of each:

✨ Imagination: Our minds are sparked by a potential reality based on a suggestion

✨ Dreams: The mind turns without any object

✨ Memory: We are continually referencing back to something

Have you ever been trying to focus or be present but your mind is stuck ruminating on other things? Maybe your mind slips away while you’re at your desk or you zone out while mindlessly scrolling on social media.

When we get deep into our imagination we ignore the present reality and focus on the distraction.

Example: You’re at a traffic light and someone in a Bentley pulls up next to you and before you know it you’re fantasizing about having a million-dollar bank account, a job as a CEO, a house on the beach….

When you’re dreaming in sleep, the mind turns without any object at it. It can sometimes be very confusing and dizzying.

Sleep can be extremely useful because it is one of the ways we organize our intuition. Sleep is our swarming intuition at any grounding in the conscious reality. You can learn a lot about yourself by studying your dreams.

Memory is when we refer back to something, and your memory is only as good as your last recall of it. Anything and everything can be a trigger. Look at your surroundings right now. I bet that you can tie a memory to almost everything that you see.

Memory is incredibly strong because we use it to judge what we like or don’t. But as you know things change, y’all! And they change quickly!

If you can calm the mind and work towards removing these perceptions that the mind uses to turn and distract you from reality, this will allow you to experience the beauty of the present moment.

Notice what distracts you the most: imagination, dreams, or memories? How can you be more thoughtful to work towards a more present you?
